It being just after noon on a Saturday, the store is doing a brisk business and throughout the parking lot, the activity is frenetic. Cars and SUVs zip up and down the aisles hunting for that premium parking spot close to the entrances. It is here we see our first hints of deviance, speeding and cutting across parking stalls were both very commonalmost to the point of becoming the social norm. The vehicles run the gamut of cost from six-figure German imports to rickety dirt bikes and everything in between. Business is so good at this store as to warrant the permanent presence of a police cruiser. Heading through the triple-wide automatic sliding doors, the ubiquitous paid Greeter says a perfunctory hello to passers-by that only vaguely acknowledge him. The store itself is immense. Hundreds of feet in both length and width, it is lit by wall to wall soft fluorescent lighting that only just pales next to the midday sun that was baking the parking lot outside. The noise is a muted rumble of dozens of people, shopping cart wheels on hard floors, the shuffle of feet and, above it all, the higher-pitched and unmoderated voices of excited children exclaiming over this or that bauble. As shoppers tromp up and down the aisles they are assailed by a myriad of smells: coffee, plastic, rayon fabric, ozone, body odor, and various perfumes and colognes. Demographics. While the purpose of this ethnography is not to explore the demographics of Newport Country, a quick review of that data will help to identify if the observed population is a fair representation of the feeder community. According to the 2017 U.S. Census Bureau, Newport Countys population of roughly 80,000 is predominantly white (86.2%) with Hispanics (5.33%) and black people (2.96%) making up the bulk of the minority. With a market penetration of 95%, stores like this Wal-Mart offer a terrific opportunity to perform an ethnographic study over a random sampling of the population. Gender Norms. Throughout the observation period a couple of gender trends became evident. First, was the distribution of genders in the various departments of the store. Women were observed in disproportionate numbers shopping in childrens clothing, housewares, and the infant care departments when compared to men by a ratio of three to one. Most of the men were found shopping in typically masculine departments like sporting goods, automotive and electronics, outnumbering women two to one. Overall, more women were in the store than men with 57 of 78 adult shoppers being women. Another disparity was the number of each group of adults that was accompanied by children. Women were again the stronger showing. Of 33 distinct sets of children, 21 were accompanied solely by an adult female, six were accompanied solely by an adult male, and the remaining six were accompanied by both an adult male and an adult female. From these observations, it may be assumed that American women are predominantly focused on the traditionally feminine roles when shopping for household goods whereas men are more likely to shop for prototypically masculine household items in support of kinetic (sports and outdoor diversions) and technical activities. A second conclusion might be that women are more likely to be charged with child care, even outside of the home based on the higher incidence of female guardianship observed. Family dynamic. Some insight into family dynamics was also gained through this ethnography. Most notably was the number of family units (for the purposes of this observation, any group consisting of at least one adult leading at least one child or one geriatric) when compared to single adult shoppers. Family units represented 68 percent of all shoppers. This would follow reason since the store boasts departments for every age from infant to geriatric. While shopping alone would certainly be more expeditious and less contentious, it seemed that shopping as a family was more important. Not only were children more often led by women, but multi-generational groups also appeared to center around a woman more often than they did a man. In fact, even when an adult male was present, most of the conversation and, ultimately the decisions on what product to select, was conducted between the woman and her elders. This would imply a matriarchal dynamic in the context of shopping here. Interestingly, this held true even over a couple interactions that occurred in the automotive departments. Another facet of this dynamic centered around the shopping cart. In the majority of cases, the adult that was pushing the shopping cart was the ego of the group. The path around the store, the pace of that transit and quite often the decision on what did or did not go in were all decided by the pusher of the cart. Females were predominantly in this position, edging out the men in family groups 23 to 14. Socializing and children Socializing is the act of passing on or learning a cultures rules and values. On several occasions, parents were seen taking the opportunity of shopping to socialize their children. Teaching them to modulate their voices, keep their hands to themselves and exercise restraint were the predominant themes of this instruction. From this, it might be concluded that American culture is a conservative one where public behavior is concerned! These acts of socialization were reinforced even by apparent total strangers through either verbal or non-verbal means. Some adults would give looks or sighs at social deviance and some would straight up comment to either the offender or the offenders apparent guardian, offering encouragement or criticism. Neither form of input seemed to be particularly welcome, but the parents would invariably reinvigorate their instruction to the children. Beyond this, there was very little real interaction between groups or family units. Most of the time, these parties were more likely to avoid eye contact, move to avoid close proximity to strangers, and were more often than not self-centered. This is not to say that overt rudeness was displayed at any point, more a general indifference. These are not the norms of community and shared experience we normally associate with American living. American Consumerism Consumerism is a primary facet of American life and that was observed at the registers. However, without discussing each purchase with the shoppers themselves, it is difficult to say if the goods bought were selected for materialistic reasons. Most of the items in these carts were not what would normally be considered essentials. Sure, there were food stuffs and basic household goods, but the vast majority of items purchased were for entertainment, quality of life, and luxury items. Based on a very limited observation window I would draw the following conclusions. American culture, at least in the context of shopping is slightly matriarchal, with strong familial ties and a healthy respect for elders. (Traditionally) Feminine roles are predominantly performed by women and masculine roles by men. Public behavior tends towards the conservative at least until you get to the parking lot! Wal-Mart does provide a healthy cross-section of the local community, but I do not believe it is the best representation of American culture. People dont go to Wal-Mart to socialize or interact and so it is unlikely to see any real examples of culture beyond the ravenous consumerism that is our societies bad side. From my personal experience in less urbanized areas, I would paint a much warmer and communal picture of our culture than what I saw at this Wal-Mart.

A Deconstruction of the Story Dmitri Dmitritch Gurov, a married man with a daughter who is twelve years and two sons in school and lives in Yalta.   Gurov has a keen interest in people who are new in the area spots a young lady Anna Sergeyevna , a young lady with an average height accompanied by a Pomeranian dog strolling on the front of the sea. The lady is a visitor in Yalta and residents only refers to her as ‘the lady with a dog’ nobody really knows her name. after a careful analysis of his approach plan to the lady, they meet at the Gardens and they are both dining when Gurov shakes his finger at the lady’s dog. Thee dog barks furiously but the lady assures Gurov that the dog dos not bite. After several meetings Gurov discovers that the lady’s name is Anna Sergeyevne. She is married to Von Diderit in Old Gontcharny. They begin to have a keen interest in each other and when Anna Sergeyevne receives information that her husband is sick and wants her, she leaves Yalta but tells Guro v that they will never meet again. Gurov remains behind but he is not peaceful because he misses her dearly. He makes arrangement and follows her to her husbands place and they reunite again in a passionate relationship. This means that in Anna’s engrossment in love, she is also passionately attracted to Gurov and wishes that their relationship could exist in the knowledge of people who new them but since they were both married, this was an impossible.   It is therefore true that the pair themselves is binary opposition. The live of Gurov is also an instance of binary opposition. He seems to have a happy public life. With his family and a job as a banker, one can easily say that e has a happier family life as well as occupational life. To the reader however this is a contrary, we know that the man is having an affair with a married woman. In fact as the story ends he admits that love caught up with him in his old age when he sees grey hair when kissing Anna. To Build a Fire Significance of the Words Dying Essay and Death The significance of the words dying and death in Jack Londons 1910 novel, To Build a Fire continuously expresses the mans dwindling warmth and bad luck in his journey along the Yukon trail to meet the boys at camp. London associates dying with the mans diminishing ability to stay warm in the frigid Alaskan climate. The main characters predicament slowly worsens one level at a time finally resulting in death. The narrator informs the reader the man lacks personal experience travelling in the Yukon terrain. The old-timer warned the man about the harsh realities of the Klondike. The confident main character thinks of the old-timer at Sulphur Creek as womanish. Along the trail, the man falls into a hidden spring and attempts to build a fire to dry his socks and warm himself. With his wet feet quickly growing numb, he realizes he has only one chance to successfully build a fire or face the harsh realities of the Yukon at one-hundred nine degrees below freezing. Falling snow from a tree blots out the fire and the character realizes he had just heard his own sentence of death. Jack London introduces death to the reader in this scene. The man realizes a second fire must be built without fail. The mans mind begins to run wild with thoughts of insecurity and death when the second fire fails. He recollects the story of a man who kills a steer to stay warm and envisions himself killing his dog and crawling into the carcass to warm up so he can build a fire to save himself. London writes, a certain fear of death, dull and oppressive, came to him. As the man slowly freezes, he realizes he is in serious trouble and can no longer make excuses for himself. Acknowledging he would never get to the camp and would soon be stiff and dead, he tries to clear this morbid thought from his mind by running down the trail in a last ditch effort to pump blood through his extremities. The climax of the story describes the man picturing his body completely frozen on the trail. He falls into the snow thinking, he is bound to freeze anyway and freezing was not as bad as people thought. There were a lot worse ways to die. The man drowsed off into the most comfortable and satisfying sleep he had ever known. The dog looked on creeping closer, filling his nostrils with the scent of death. Londons portrayal of the man does not initially give the reader the theme of dying, but slowly develops the theme as the story develops. The story doesnt mention death until the last several pages. The main character changes from an enthusiastic pioneer to a sad and desperate man. The conclusion of the story portrays the man accepting his fate and understands the old-timer at Sulphur Creek had been right; no man must travel alone in the Klondike after fifty below. George Washington's First Inauguration The inauguration of George Washington as the first President of the United States on April 30, 1789, was a public event witnessed by a cheering crowd. The celebration in the streets of New York City was also a very serious event, however, as it marked the  beginning of a new era. After struggling with the Articles of Confederation in the years following the Revolutionary War, there had been a need for a more effective federal government and a convention in Philadelphia in the summer of 1781 created the Constitution, which established the office of president. George Washington had been selected as president of the Constitutional Convention and, given his great stature as a national hero, it seemed obvious he would be elected as the first President of the United States. Washington  easily won the first presidential election in late 1788 and when he took the oath of office on the balcony of Federal Hall in lower Manhattan months later, it must have seemed to the citizens of the young nation that a stable government was finally coming together. As Washington stepped out onto the balcony of the building, many precedents would be created. The basic format of that first inauguration more than 225 years ago is essentially repeated every four years. Preparations for the Inauguration After delays in counting votes and certifying the election, Washington was officially informed that he had been elected on April 14, 1789. The secretary of the Congress traveled to Mount Vernon to deliver the news. In an oddly formal meeting, Charles Thomson, the official messenger, and Washington read prepared statements to each other. Washington agreed to serve. He left for New York City two days later. The trip was long, and even with Washingtons carriage (a luxury vehicle of the time) it was arduous. Washington was met by crowds at every stop. On many nights he felt obligated to attend dinners hosted by local dignitaries, during which he was toasted effusively. After a large crowd welcomed him in Philadelphia, Washington was hoping to arrive in New York City (the location of the inauguration as D.C. had not yet become the nations capital) quietly. He didnt get his wish. On April 23, 1789, Washington was ferried to Manhattan from Elizabeth, New Jersey, aboard an elaborately decorated barge.  His arrival in New York was a massive public event. A letter describing the festivities that appeared in newspapers mentioned a cannon salute was fired as Washingtons barge passed the Battery at the southern tip of Manhattan. A parade formed consisting of a cavalry troop formed when he landed and also included an artillery unit, military officers, and the Presidents Guard composed of Grenadiers of the First Regiment. Washington, along with city and state officials and followed by hundreds of citizens, marched to the mansion rented as the Presidents House. The letter from New York published in the Boston Independent Chronicle on April 30, 1789, mentioned that flags and banners were displayed from buildings, and bells were rung. Women waved from windows. During the following week, Washington was kept busy holding meetings and organizing his new household on Cherry Street. His wife, Martha Washington, arrived in New York a few days later accompanied by servants which included enslaved people brought from Washingtons Virginia estate at Mount Vernon. The Inauguration The date for the inauguration was set for April 30, 1789, a Thursday morning. At noon a procession began from the Presidents House at Cherry Street. Led by military units, Washington and other dignitaries walked through several streets to Federal Hall. Keenly aware that everything he did that day would be seen as significant, Washington chose his wardrobe carefully. Though he was mostly known as a soldier, Washington wanted to emphasize that the presidency was a civilian position, and he did not wear a uniform. He also knew his clothes for the big event had to be American, not European. He wore a suit made of American fabric, a brown broadcloth made in Connecticut that was described as resembling velvet. In a small nod to his military background, he wore a dress sword. After reaching the building on the corner of Wall and Nassau Streets, Washington passed through a formation of soldiers and entered the building. According to an account in a newspaper called The Gazette of the United States and published on May 2, 1789, he was then introduced to both houses of Congress. That was, of course, a formality, as Washington would have already known many of the members of the House and Senate. Stepping out onto the gallery, a large open porch on the front of the building, Washington was administered the  oath of office by the Chancellor of the State of New York, Robert Livingston. The tradition of presidents being sworn in by the Chief Justice of the United States was still years in the future for a very good reason: the Supreme Court would not exist until September 1789, when John Jay became the first Chief Justice. A report published in a newspaper (The New York Weekly Museum) on May 2, 1789, described the scene which followed the administration of the oath of office: The Chancellor then proclaimed him THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES, which was followed by the instant discharge of 13 cannon, and loud repeated shouts; THE PRESIDENT bowing to the people, the air again rang with their acclamations. He then retired with the two Houses [of Congress] to the Senate Chamber... In the Senate chamber, Washington delivered the first inaugural address. He had originally written a very long speech which his friend and adviser, future president James Madison, suggested he replace. Madison drafted a much shorter speech in which Washington expressed typical modesty. Following his speech, Washington along with new vice president John Adams and members of Congress walked to St. Pauls Chapel on Broadway. After a church service, Washington returned to his residence. The citizens of New York, however, continued celebrating. Newspapers reported that illuminations, which would have been elaborate slide shows, were projected on buildings that night. A report in the Gazette of the United States  noted that illuminations at the homes of the French and Spanish ambassadors were particularly elaborate. Meaning of life Essay Aristotle’s account of motion can be found in the Physics. By motion, Aristotle (384-322 BCE) understands any kind of change. He defines motion as the actuality of a potentiality. Initially, Aristotle’s definition seems to involve a contradiction. However, commentators on the works of Aristotle, such as St. Thomas Aquinas, maintain that this is the only way to define motion. In order to adequately understand Aristotle’s definition of motion it is necessary to understand what he means by actuality and potentiality. Aristotle uses the words energeia and entelechiainterchangeably to describe a kind of action. A linguistic analysis shows that, by actuality, Aristotle means both energeia, which means being-at-work, and entelechia, which means being-at-an-end. These two words, although they have different meanings, function as synonyms in Aristotle’s scheme. For Aristotle, to be a thing in the world is to be at work, to belong to a particular species, to act for an end and to form material into enduring organized wholes. Actuality, for Aristotle, is therefore close in meaning to what it is to be alive, except it does not carry the implication of mortality. From the Middle Ages to modern times, commentators disagreed on the interpretation of Aristotle’s account of motion. An accurate rendering of Aristotle’s definition must include apparently inconsistent propositions: (a) that motion is rest, and (b) that a potentiality, which must be, if anything, a privation of actuality, is at the same time that actuality of which it is the lack. St. Thomas Aquinas was prepared to take these propositions seriously. St. Thomas observes that to say that something is in motion is just to say that it is both what it is already and something else that it is not yet. Accordingly, motion is the mode in which the future belongs to the present, it is the present absence of just those particular absent things which are about to be. St. Thomas thus resolves the apparent contradiction between potentiality and actuality in Aristotle’s definition of motion by arguing that in every motion actuality and potentiality are mixed or blended. St.Thomas’ interpretation of Aristotle’s definition of motion, however, is not free of difficulties. His interpretation seems to trivialize the meaning of entelechia. One implication of this interpretation is that whatever happens to be the case right now is an entelechia, as though something which is intrinsically unstable as the instantaneous position of an arrow in flight deserved to be described by the word which Aristotle everywhere else reserves for complex organized states which persist, which hold out in being against internal and external causes tending to destroy them. In the Metaphysics, however, Aristotle draws a distinction between two kinds of potentiality. On the one hand, there are latent or inactive potentialities. On the other hand, there are active or at-work potentialities. Accordingly, every motion is a complex whole, an enduring unity which organizes distinct parts. Things have being to the extent that they are or are part of determinate wholes, so that to be means to be something, and change has being because it always is or is part of some determinate potentiality, at work and manifest in the world as change.

A student with a cell phone is an uninterested student, one with a short attention span who cares more about socializing than education. When I was teaching, all too often I turned around from writing something on the blackboard to find students text-messaging or otherwise playing with their phones. Come the end of the term, a handful of students would fail the class and far too many would drop out of school. The onus for failure should be placed on distractions in the classroom, specifically cell phones. Parents think of cell phones as a connection to their children in an emergency. But I wonder what the last situation was that genuinely called for an immediate phone call to a child. In most cases, contacting the hospital or the police would seem more urgent. And parents can always call the school’s main office to reach their children. Cell phones are status symbols for teenagers because when their phone rings while the teacher is talking, everyone laughs. Because playing vid eo games on their cell makes them look cool. Because text messaging their friend in the next room is more fun than learning about topic sentences. So is listening to the new Three 6 Mafia song they just downloaded onto their cell. This, however, is also possible without a cellphone, as schools have phones and any important information can be conveyed through it. Cellphones can be seen as a means employed by students for cheating during examinations. They can simply text anyone and ask for assistance. Not only this, it can give rise to after school gang activities and be misused in many ways, like making prank calls just for fun. This can  lead to serious consequences and cause unnecessary panic as well as waste time. The aforementioned points clearly establish the fact that the reasons for not allowing cellphones in schools are based on clear reservations and not on flimsy grounds, hence cellphones should not be allowed at schools. In recent times, the number of people owning mobile phones has increased dramatically. Now mobile phones are not just for calling, but you can now text, take and send pictures, record videos, access the internet, play games and much more. The variety of functions has increased dramatically. They have also become a lot cheaper. Thus more and more young people now own a mobile. So should they be allowed to bring them to school? Mobile phones can cause a distraction in education. They can disturb teachers and students. For example, if you were working hard on a piece of work, concentrating hard, and a person’s phone rings, it disrupts the whole class. You may become side-tracked or the teacher may be interrupted during speaking to the class. Thus teaching would be constantly disrupted if this kept happening. Thus education standards would deteriorate. Looking then at long term effects, if this was happening every day, you would be wasting five minutes a day, so nearly half an hour a week, and so that would be over ten hours a year of disruption. Also, mobile phones provide a large temptation to cheat in tests. They can communicate to almost anywhere and anyone in the world. Because they are small, students can quietly and discreetly send a text and it can go unnoticed. You got to school to learn, not to waste time playing games or cheating in tests. Research has proven that frequent use of a mobile phone can put the owner at risk of long term health damage. Mobile phones have radiation in them which they send out which can destroy or damage cells. Thus a student who uses a mobile phone regularly is at risk of health damage. With the increase in ownership of mobiles, there is increased usage and so the students are putting themselves at risk more and more of health damage. Also younger students may not be properly educated on phone usage. Most phones nowadays have internet access on them.
